AOC CHÂTEAUNEUF DU PAPE

TERROIRS

La Fiole du Pape is crafted from a diverse range of terroirs across the communes of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Courthézon, Sorgues, Orange, and Bédarrides. The wine is a blend of several grape varieties, primarily Grenache (70%), along with Syrah, Mourvèdre, Cinsault, and smaller amounts of Clairette, Counoise, and Vaccarèse. Many of the plots are interplanted with a variety of grape types, sometimes including
rare or unusual ones.

The soils are divided into four main types: sand, safre, calcareous sand with flat limestone stones (lauses), and red clay covered with pebbles. Each soil type contributes unique characteristics to the wines: concentration and tannins from the clay, aromatic complexity from the safres, finesse from the sand, and freshness from the lauses. This diversity gives La Fiole du Pape its complexity and smoothness, which is further enhanced by the art of ageing and blending.

Châteauneuf-du-Pape musts undergo maceration for about 3 to 4 weeks to enhance structure. The grape varieties, often blended together, ferment simultaneously, further enriching the complexity of the fermentation aromas.

The average ageing period is 12 to 18 months. Fruitier, fresher wines are typically aged in vats, while more concentrated wines are usually aged in wood. La Fiole du Pape is composed of about 70% of the most recent or second-most recent vintage, with the addition of older vintages (some aged for up to 10 years) adding layers of complexity. This skilful blending ensures a consistent character, much like the process used in champagne. The process guarantees a stable quality over time, offering a wine that is ready to drink while maintaining a cellar ageing potential of at least 5 years.

TASTING

This wine has a superb deep, brilliant and clear ruby colour.

The intense and complex nose opens up with powerful aromas of liquorice and wild blackberries.

When aerated, notes of cherries in brandy and a touch of spice bring depth and elegance.

On the palate, it is beautifully rounded with flavours of black cherry, garrigue and mushroom, enhanced by notes of smoke, black pepper and white pepper. Supple and balanced, this wine is best enjoyed young, although it has the capacity to evolve over 5 to 7 years towards aromas of venison, leather and tobacco.

Best served at 17°C after opening for 3 hours, this wine is the perfect accompaniment to beef tartare with vegetables, leg of lamb or wild boar in sauce, bringing out the full richness of its flavours and natural elegance.
